Mut

Originally from the Kingdom of Kush (or Nubia; present-day northern Sudan), Mut was the mother goddess that in time took over some of the characteristics of Amunet, Hathor, and Sekhmet. The new wife of Amun, she was the patron of the pharaohs during the Middle and New Kingdoms, for which she was revered in Thebes, along with her son, Khonsu, a local variation of the god of the moon.

She was depicted as a young woman with the double crown of Egypt on her head—but in Upper Egypt, she would also often be portrayed as a lioness goddess, like Sekhmet, or as a cat, cobra, or cow. The latter depiction would honor Mut as the heavenly goddess, like Hathor.

Mut’s worship became widespread in the later eras of ancient Egypt. Apart from being revered in Thebes, she had a temple in Karnak, where she would be revered daily; the queen of Egypt would often be the presiding chief priestess in these rituals. If the pharaoh was female, the role of the priestess would be taken over by her daughter. The records show that Mut was highly favored by women in power. It was the second female pharaoh, Hatshepsut, who brought her cult to the forefront and promoted it.
